The more you sweat, the more you need to replace. Not
just water, but sodium, potassium, and all the other
great stuff that comes around on the tray of goodies
the water bearers sometimes carry.
Heat exhaustion is a serious problem, it's just more
fixable. Water, gator-aid, and eventually food.
Remove layers to a decent level - go to the tunic,
t-shirt, or chemise (women in bodices - beware in heat
and humidity!) We use ice packs on the back of the
neck, armpits, and groin on the ambulance; yeah, it's
cold and may get the persons attention, but it'll cool
the blood longer than a cool compress will.
Heat stroke is a "do not pass go" problem. At this
point, the body will begin to stop compensating for
lost volume (H2O) and nutrients. In English - all
those symptoms mentioned earlier and heart "flutter"
(if you ignored everything else, this is "your sign"),
breathing problems, hot and dry skin, and you may try
to fight those trying to help you because of
confusion. Remember the brain on drugs commercial all
those years ago? Similar reaction.... A hospital is
needed at this point.
No one knows your body better than you do yourself.
It's hot and yucky, but you're on vacation. If you
have to stop playing for a few hours, do it. Have
fun, but be aware of yourself.
