[MR] Question: Where can one get training in live steel?

I would suggest a group in the Mid Atlantic region called "Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia". They are not affiliated with the SCA, but I have seen them do a live steel demo where they reenacted the battle of Hastings. Here is their website.

http://www.markland.org/

Hope that helps. I can't vouch for them other than that I had fun watching their demo.

Greetings to the List:

When a coworker of mine heard me describing the SCA, she asked, "Can they
teach me how to swordfight with real swords?" I explained that we in the SCA
do not use live steel in our tournaments.

She wants to learn combat with live steel. And yes, she means playing with
swords, not, quoth she, "that fancy fencing thing". Nor is she interested in
martial arts sword use.

I know there's got to be somebody on this list who can give me a lead to
pass along to her. My first thought was the folks who train the Maryland
Renn Fair cast, whoever they are.

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks,

Amie Sparrow

There's also Adrian Empire, but she will have to start with Shinai (think
martial arts sword type, bamboo, not rattan); and train up from there; they
call it a safety thing.

I thought there might have been a group called Empire of Chivalry and Steel,
but I don't know if they are active or not; nor do I know what type of live
steel they do. You may have to google them.

Hope that also helps!

Based on experience as a Marine and professional fire
fighter I would suggest one liter per hour of
exertion. If I told you to go pee in a cup and you
couldn't then you aren't hydrated enough.

Add to that, if you *did* manage to pee in a cup and it was a deep yellow
versus a pale to clear yellow to no color whatsoever, you need to drink more
water.

My Lady,

I can recommend the book "Symbols of the Church" by Caroline
Morson. It covers medieval and modern symbols in church art as well as
the sybolism behind the layout of the church, priest's vestments, and
other items. Below is the link for it on Amazon. Also on this Amazon
page, you can continue your search for similar books on the subject.

Best of Luck,
Lady Sorcha
