With the current discussion about hydration on the Merry Rose I thought I would repost some reference information I have been aware of for a few years. This particular webpage's references I have checked myself and cross checked with two sports medicine doctors who confirmed the data. As a side note, I have heard rumors from the Civil War crowd that "Pvt. Gregory" is really is Dr Greg Harris of Endurance Training fame. I hope this answers your questions.
