You're right--I've been in several places that call check-in "troll" and
probably just as many that call it "gate." As long as you pick a term
that's clear in meaning, it has the potential to catch on.
As far as kids, I've always been partial to the term "urchin." It does date
back to Middle English, though sadly I don't have an OED in front of me to
see if that particular meaning is period. The only downside is that it
connotes mischeviousness and, even though most kids are at least a *little*
mischevious, I can see it being taken the wrong way...
