Actually, Gorm, it is one of those perversions that came out of Meridies,
Trimaris, etc. rather like the grant-bearing orders did. (And other illicit
titles like Marquis which was prevalent in Meridies when I joined there!)
And, actually, by the terms of the game we play (Corpora, etc.) using titles
that are not approved as equivalent titles to approved titles is indeed not
allowed and could be considered a breach of courtesy. (And THL is NOT
approved in Corpora. Trust me. I was there.)

THL stands for "The Honorable Lord" (or Lady).
It is a Victorian invention, pretty much completely inappropriate for period
use.
Some SCA Kingdoms, particularly in the Midwest and West, use it as a
designation for those holding Grants of Arms, as opposed to Awards of Arms.
In Atlantia, an example would be a Golden Dolphin, as opposed to a simple
AoA receipient.
It is not codified in Society Law, nor Atlantian Kingdom Law, so there is no
formal restriction on it's use here. It's a habit we should not be
encouraging, but it is strongly used in some quarters.
Hope this helps,
Gorm of Berra
