Maybe it's just me, but that's wrong. My "conscious effort to reply" is 
to hit the reply button. For EVERY group. Only this one has to be 
"different." If I didn't want to reply, I wouldn't reply. And I've very 
seldom (like one in a hundred) ever had a reply that was specifically 
intended to go ONLY to one person. When that's the case, that's the 
person I send the e-mail to.

The purpose of an e-mail group is to communicate and discuss. I don't 
grok the idea of a default that automatically chokes off any potential 
for discussion by channeling a reply on an e-mail group to a single 
person rather than to the whole group.

That's bad on the people for being careless, then. We've all done it. 
But on a group list, diverting a reply to "private" should be a 
specially selected option, not the frikkin' default.
