However, it has a great benefit.   Having it set up this way makes it a 
conscious effort to reply to the whole list.

The other way ends up making many more 'meant to be private emails' go 
to the list.  Since the default is to go to the list.

For a high volume, high subscriber list like this one, I prefer it this way.
