Good day your majesty:
With all due respect I would have to agree with the
original poster.
Being relative newcomers (2 years now) we had no idea
that the newsletter has the mailing options you
listed. In fact there is no indication anyplace I am
aware of that the Acorn is mailed via 3rd class
postage. The pre-stamped permit on the document
itself merely states "Non-Profit Org, US Postage,
PAID, Charlotte NC and Permit No. ..."
And I quote from the SCA website:
"There are several levels of membership in the
Society: a Sustaining membership ($35) includes a
year's subscription to your kingdom's newsletter,
which contains kingdom news, announcements for events
taking place in your area, and local group contacts.
Lower-priced Associate and Family memberships are also
available.
You are not required to purchase an SCA membership
before attending SCA meetings and events. Membership
is a requirement for holding office in SCA groups, for
participation in combat and combat-related activities
in some kingdoms, and for eligibility to receive
awards in some kingdoms.
Benefits of membership:
Membership card - by signing the waiver on the
membership application, you can speed your check-in at
events by presenting your card instead of signing
waivers at the door.
SCA Publications - Sustaining members (in the US)
receive their kingdom's newsletter (International
sustaining members have a choice of either the kingdom
newsletter or Tournaments Illuminated). Sustaining
members can also purchase subscriptions to other
kingdoms' newsletters, Tournaments Illuminated (the
quarterly magazine of the Society), the Compleat
Anachronist pamphlet series, and the Board of
Directors' Proceedings..."
The only additional purchase option listed is to
purchase the newsletters of the other kingdoms for $10
each...no where does language appear to indicate that
one's own newsletter is sent 3rd class and if one
wants it faster, buy it.
My lord and I certainly would not mind paying the
extra $10 for first class mail, but had this
discussion not arisen and your response indicate
several options, we would not have known. I guess the
best thing to do would be to ask the webminister of
the SCA membership page to clarify things a bit.
