this came across much harsher than i intended. i was
attempting by my whole post to say that we should be
trying to develop some simple signal flags, something
so simple that no one could actually register them. i
don't think anyone could register black and white
checky all by itself. in this kingdom, black and white
checky is associated with one person, but it would not
be an innapropriate appropriation of his arms to
develop, say, a black and white checky signal flag. we
would need to be careful to leave off the bottony
cross etc, but a simple flag like that would not be
stealing a person's arms at all. now let us suppose
that some other kingdom randomly decided to make
themselves a checky flag to use as a marker for lining
up one of their kingdom subunits before a battle.
would anyone expect Duke Anton to get riled up about
it? i don't think he would. it was this situation i
was attempting to describe, but in my haste and in an
attempt to set up a joke i inadvertantly made myself
sound like a jerk planning on ignoring the just rights
of the owner of properly registered heraldry. 

sorry.

lets slap spike on a few colored backgrounds and call
it a day. we really don't need regional tabards and
baldrics and headgear. we need units that fight
together to adopt their own personal livery. i will
fight in mass battles in the red and blue of Caer
Mear. i think two surcotes each is plenty for almost
everyone in the sca, one personal and one unit. if we
want to have some signal flags (Bryce already has the
cog banner for the central region) then we should make
some up. we could get really creative and use the
flags to signal unit commands (5 minutes left in a res
battle etc) but as for a full blown device for each
regional army, that's a little excessive.
