interesting take on the whole culture of protection. having worked as a
bouncer for many years and having been in many fights i can say that ivan
arsenaults (or doc holiday as he likens himself) book is and interesting
read. a little short on reality in many ways and very clear on some good
techniques in others it is a fun read but in no way should it be taken too
seriously. if given a choice fighting is failure unless it is fighting for
sport. but most often fighting is something that must be done to protect
others and when it is done it should be done with extreme caution and
extreme disregard at the same time. kinda goes along with a great quote
that i have lived my life by since the day i read it:
If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his
vengeance need not be feared.

Having been a bouncer for a stretch of three years, and never having been in
a fight in my life. I adhere to the Ten Commandments of Bouncing found at
http://www.bouncersbible.com . As the "Doc" says, If you have to fight, you
have already failed. These are the same principles I used while I was a
Firefighter/EMT for six years, even through some very hairy situations.
Being prepared is good, but never having to use the knowledge is even
better.

Specifically, for that quote, "Pool Cues, Beer Bottles, and Baseball Bats",
subtitled "Animal's guide to improvised weaponry". Excellent book. Like any
good Fechtmeister, he points out that (a) fighting hurts, even if you win,
(b) getting hurt sucks, so does going to jail, and (c) Situational awareness
will frequently keep you from having to deal with (a) and (b).
