Should something go awry and VDOT doesn't finish in time, go Domenico's
way anyway. Route 288 connects to I-95 at one end and to I-64 at the
other. There's a place in Midlothian where the two ends don't meet yet
(but hopefully will this week). You can detour an extra three miles
and connect from one to the other easily.

At the end of the open section (beyond the sign saying "last exit
before toll" which just isn't true anymore), you will be forced to exit
at Lucks Lane. At the top of the ramp, turn left. You'll come to a
light with Charter Colony (it's a Road, I think, but could be a Drive
or the like); turn right at that light. You'll pass Midlothian High
School and get to Midlothian Turnpike (Route 60); turn left, heading
west. Exit back onto Route 288. There is not a whole lot of traffic
on the detour (you'll be west of the heavily commercial part of
Midlothian Turnpike), and you still miss downtown Richmond.

I shaved 12 minutes from the trip between Colonial Heights and Afton
Mountain going that way last month, and that was with the detour
through scenic Midlothian. If VDOT does get the road open, it will be
even faster.
