I work in the medical field and would just like to point out that drains
from a mastectomy are often kept in place for several days to a week after
surgery. It is no great hardship to go home with them still attached.
This said, it would certainly be preferable to stay at least 24 hours where
one can receive proper care, rather than being discharged a mere few hours
after surgery.
