Also, the drainage tubes will have to stay for more
than 24 hours.  I should know as I had to undergo the
procedure.  It is not a terribly uncomfortable thing,
just annoying.

Staying at the hospital for 24 hours will not
eliminate the tubes.  You will still go home with them
attached to you, but I agree in that it will give the
patient more time to recover.  (Having said that, in
some cases it is more comfy to go back home as opposed
to share your room with some other patient. 
Especially when said other patient has the nurses
running around and turning on the lights on you all
night.)
