I know in our Barony we have a Chatelaine that carries to each of our events
loaner garb for people that are new and we have A&S Sundays with projects
and classes on how to create a more period outside for the group, i.e.
cooking, brewing, garb construction, table display, different crafts. Even
if you can't afford wool or don't like the feel of it you can make a
wonderful mantle out of a solid fleece in period colors that looks just
wonderful.
I would like to include in this challenge a personal challenge for everyone,
that I've actually started doing for myself. I started this a few years
ago, each year I set a goal for myself as to create one part of my persona
more period. The first year was to create an accurate outfit and even to
research it, even though I used the sewing machine I followed the design and
tried to come up with something that looked to an outsider looking in very
period. Then the next year a way to avoid carrying around a tape recorder
or notebook or laptop I challenged myself to make a wax tablet and did so.
(I actuall won a prize for it) The next year period trim in which I did
blackwork and started putting it to use. This year, I'm focusing on
creating a period demo display for my illumination work including a
breakdown scribal table.
Last but not least, the ongoing challenge that I've started and have been
very lucky to have others of the like mind is to have period past-times i.e.
games and gaming at events to keep modern intrusions such as gameboys,
yugioh cards and magic cards at events as well as to fight the famous phrase
"I'm Bored"
Just my two tuppence worth,
