In the bottom right corner of Pieter Breugel the Elder's "Children's Games"(1560 AD), these kids are playing a game that modern folks call "Buck Buck" or "Johnny on the Pony." I used to love this game, and we knew it was good when the school banned it.
Have any of you every played it?

Charles,
I did--a LOT--up in Carolingia when I was a little and definitely NOT in the SCA, which would not be born for a few years yet. ;-) But then Meli is an Olde Phart.... :-)
We had a few girls, myself included, but mostly boys... though none of us had a secret weapon. <g>
I'm delighted to know it is a period game, and wish I was in shape to play it. Alas, one of the Bad Things about growing older is that one becomes, ahem, a little more fragile as the years creep by... :-)
Still beats all heck out of the alternative, but still. Johnny on the Pony was a childhood Good Memory, and I thank you for reviving it. :-)
in service,
Meli
Stierbach, by way of Carolingia
