Let's see... by the time I was old enough to be physically able to play,  
the school had already banned it, and the mothers on our block had already 
banned it. So it was something that only existed as legend in our 
neighborhood.

(who as an aside notes that one of the favorite activities for kids on the 
block was, of all things, golf. Sort of. A dozen and a half kids in a back 
yard, sharing clubs, all playing the same hole at once. I suspect that it 
was often played this way in period, substituting beach for back yard.)
