I'm just commenting on this statement.  I am currently student teaching in Harford County, MD and because of cutbacks, increased birth rate and a crappy economy, teachers are being expected to teach a classroom with 43 kids in it.  This is an average.  Some teachers I know have 46 or 47 kids in their classroom.  At least in Harford County, not a single teacher has an assistant unless they have special needs students incorporated into their class and usually, you have to have 3 or more special needs kids to get an assistant.
