I would like to clarify my statement about Teens getting the least out of
events. There are many children's activities at events. How many of those
appeal to Teens? Most are geared towards the younger children. There are
currently no combat activates which teens can participate in regardless of
interest until age 16 (13-15 there is nothing.) I'm not saying that is a
bad thing, just that it is that way. A&S sometimes has youth categories
broken down into age groups...at large events..sometimes. Most of the time,
if a Teen enters A&S competition, there is no distinction on the judging
forms so they are often graded as if they were adults. This can be more
than a little intimidating for a teen where often self esteem is fragile.
Sure, teens can do service however I have seen them refused as servers for
feast and to help at troll. And, realistically, service from a teenage
perspective is a different commitment than for adults. As a teen, even a
paid member, they cannot be an officer regardless of how competent the teen
may be. Also, realistically, mundane stuff *is* what is on the minds of
teenagers. Hanging out is their interest whether it is at an event or at
the mall. I am not saying that Teens get nothing out of events just a bit
less than adults or even younger ones. I should also say that this is my
opinion, my observation as mother of a 9yr old and a 13yr old.

Olwen,
I am very pleased that you help teens participate at events. I am sure
that it is most welcome and enjoyed by those teens you encounter. However,
I am very surprised by the assumption you make regarding the parents of
teens. Most parents of teens that I have personally met are the exact
opposite of your concerns.
