I know someone that spent in the vicinity of $2k for purebred GSDs (of 
German lineage) - a breeding pair. Then decided they were too big and 
active to keep. I took them in, still have one of them, though he's 
getting a bit long in the tooth. Several of their pups ended up in 
several of the K9 units in Maryland and Northern Virgina. Both came from 
long lineages of Shutzhund Champions, and are beautiful and very 
friendly dogs - prime examples of what can be done when the breeders are 
conscientious.
