Good Gentles All,
The following is the updated information regarding Dun Carraig's
upcoming Challenge of the Heart event.
Challenge of the Heart
April 12th, 2003
Barony of Dun Carraig
There is a fragile truce in the Holy Land. Crusaders and Arabs alike
are enjoying a break in the hostilities by gathering for a day of
fellowship and feasting. Come for a day of celebration, demonstrations
of skill at arms and arts, and good cheer.
The day will see both individual and melee armored competition. The
tourney will start at noon after any authorizations. A target archery
competition will also be held during the day.
During the afternoon, classes in Beginning Middle Eastern Dance, Middle
Eastern Line Dancing and Period Middle Eastern Costume will be offered.
There will also be three Arts and Sciences competitions: a contest for
the most authentic Crusader or Middle Eastern garb; the second will be
a contest for forms of illumination depicting passages or relics of the
Crusades (done in either language); and finally a competition for
either song or poetic verse depicting something dealing with the
Crusades. For all of these, documentation is suggested but not
required. All entries are welcome.
A silent auction that has been progressing on the Merry Rose will
continue during the event: A four-course late-period meal for four
prepared by Minowara Kiritsubo-no-Ason and Baron Phillip of Ghent, to
be served at Pennsic. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer
Society. The winning bid will be announced during Baronial Court.
Merchants are welcome; please contact the autocrat in advance of the
event.
A delectable evening feast of Middle Eastern, European and Jewish fare
will be prepared by Laird Muirghen Ruadh. The menu is designed to
reflect all of the cultures that might have been present at a gathering
such as this.
Middle Eastern dance performances will be presented during dinner, and
there will be opportunities for those who attended dance classes in the
afternoon (or dancers who are a bit “rusty”) to dance as well.
The event will be held at St. James Parish in Lothian, MD. It will open
at 11:00 am and close at 11:00 pm. The site is discreetly wet.
The fee for this event is $14 on-board, $7 day trip. Non-SCA members
please add $3.00 per reservation. The fees for children under 10 are $5
on-board, $2 day trip. Babes in arms are admitted free as guests of the
Barony. Checks should be made payable to the Barony of Dun Carraig /
SCA, Inc.
Please send your reservations to Lady Amalia Kunne (Heather Kriebel) at
1210 Addison Court, Waldorf, MD 20602. Please include the names of
everyone in your party, their SCA Membership numbers, type of
reservation (On-Board or Day Trip), and your contact phone number. In
order to preserve the sanity of the autocrat and the cook you are
encouraged to mail your reservations early. Please remember: The only
true reservation is a paid reservation!
If you have any questions concerning the event, contact the autocrat,
Baron Phillip of Ghent (Jim Garm) at (410) 535-2152 (before 10:00 pm).
For specific questions regarding the Arts & Sciences competitions,
contact Da’irine ingen Chiaragain (Dawn Ellen) at tazzzie at aol.com.
Dietary concerns should be directed to Lord Muirghen at (301)373-9729,
or via e-mail at steinfeld at mail.tqci.net
