Marsaili,
The SCA is a rank structured group. As the years go on and one's involvement progresses, awards are given that give you rank within our group. Awards that have rank associated with them are known as "armigious" awards... there are three levels, that along with the date you received the award determine your rank within the group:
AoA (Award of Arms)
GoA (Grant of Arms)
Patent (Peerage)
You can get a bare AoA or GoA (a bare patent is almost unheard of) meaning that the recipient is given solely an AoA or solely a GoA. Then you have the awards that are "AoA level", or "GoA level", etc. An award that conveys an AoA, GoA, or Patent places you higher in the rank structure. Date of when you received the award is the other piece that ranks you. All of this is tracked in the OP, or, Order of Precedence (http://op.atlantia.sca.org).
In Atlantia, we did not have GoA level awards other than the Landed Baron/Baroness which when a person steps up into that position they automatically are given a GoA. As of 1 Apr, we will.
The Award of the Fountain is what started this conversation. This is an award for some outstanding service that our Monarchs choose to recognize. Its a cool thing to get, does nothing for your ranking in the society. Now, if Their Majesties see someone doing cool service stuff for some period of time and they consider that the person has distinguished themselves by their service to Atlantia, They may recognize that service with the new AoA level award (giveable after 1 Apr) known as the Order of the Opal. As time goes by, and that person continues to do lots of service and the level increases such that Their Majesties deem it to need more recognition, that person may be given the now (well, as of 1 Apr) GoA level award - Order of the Golden Dolphin... this trend can culminate in a person being recognized for outstanding service to Atlantia and the SCA as a whole at some point in the future and be recognized with the Order of the Pelican which is one of the three bestowed perrages and conveys a Patent. (This flow also works for fighting and A&S with the appropriate awards along those tracks.)
The awards available are:
SCA wide Royal Peerage (carries a patent in Atlantia):
Duke/Duchess
Count/Countess
ViCount/ViCountess
And in most kingdoms,
ViCountess and Countess are inducted as a Lady of the Rose
SCA wide Bestowed Patent level:
Chivalry (Knights - Fighting)
Pelican (Service)
Laurel (A&S)
Atlantian GoA Level (as of 1 Apr 03)
Sea Stag (fighting)
Krakken (fighting)
Golden Dolphin (service)
Pearl (A&S)
Yew Bow (archery)
Atlantian AoA level (as of 1 Apr 03)
Silver Osprey (fighting, un-belt only)
Bright Leaf (A&S)
Opal (service)
King's Missiliers (archery)
Atlantian Non-armigious Awards
Shark's Tooth (fighting)
King's Award of Excellence (King's choice)
Undine (service to Queen)
Sea Urchin (recognition of a child 12 and under)
Fountian (service)
Nonpareil (exemplify what it means to be an Atlantian)
Silver Nautilus (A&S)
Hippocampus (recognition of one 10 to 17)
Herring (autocrats)
For details of all the old awards, go to http://law.atlantia.sca.org/ I'm sure it will be updated with the new awards soon...
So, hopefully I've not confused you too bad... it gets easier as time goes by. If you've more questions, bring 'em on!
Mistress Mordrea
