I think it would be just as good to share those
comments on *this* list. So here are two I received
at various points in my career.

(1) Upon showing up at a competition with an item and
a short documentation packet: "You shouldn't have
bothered. Documentation isn't required for this
competition." Um, gee. Does that mean that
documentation is prohibited, or that actively trying
to make sure that I am doing the medieval thing is a
waste of time?

(2) Then there were the comments received from a
brewing competition in which I entered my very first
effort at winemaking. I had made the effort to get as
close to the correct ingredients as I could, meaning I
had purchased juice of a particular wine grape,
selected a particular strain of yeast, and done a
couple of other very specific things, which I detailed
in 2 typed pages of documentation. I was told: "Next
time, instead of using a kit, buy grape juice and pick
your own yeast strain." But that's what I DID!!!!!!

FWIW, I enjoy competitions, but I have, in the course
of my SCA career, only won 2. I have also competed
and lost at many more dog shows than I have won. :-)
Around the AKC world, there is a saying: "Winning or
losing is the opinion of one person on one day."
Tomorrow's show can be (and usually is) entirely
different. The same goes for the SCA -- just because
Judge X didn't like my 15th C German Froboz doesn't
mean that researching and making Frobozzen is a waste,
or that everyone in the SCA thinks so. It's one
person's opinion, on one day.
