I think that the Patent of Arms and the Order of the Laurel, while simultaneous
in bestowal, are separable. Resigning from the Order should not, per se, mean
resigning the Patent of Arms.
Several years, Marian of Edwinstowe (I think) from the East resigned from the
Order of the Laurel as well as all of her other SCA awards because she took
the commoner status of her persona that seriously. It occurred to me recently
that she could have resigned her Patent, Grant, and Awards of Arms while not
resigning from the Order of the Laurel. That would make her a commoner, but
still a Laurel and a Mistress -- properly recognizing her skills while still
having her appear a commoner, armigerously.
Hmmm...this theory has probably never been actually tested.
