Search thrift shops. GoodWill, Salvation Army, etc. You can often find
much more than tacky clothes. I bought my favorite machine at a Salvation
Army for $10 about 6 years ago, it was a brand new 1950's Delco ( a Singer
knockoff) that still sews through silk just as beautifully as through 8
layers of canvas. I've used it for 3 pavilions so far. Just keep your eyes
& ears open, and when you go to an event in another town take a  moment to
browse thru the thrift shops along the way. You never know what you'll
find.
