You'll get my gratitude for sure!

Some ideas:

If you are looking to meet tons of people (albeit briefly), help out at 
troll (registration) -- EVERYONE passes through there, though many do not 
stay long.

For getting to know a small number of people better, try the kitchen.

If you want to exercise your pushy side, be a waterbearer. :-)
(Seriously, though, I *do* appreciate being told to stay hydrated!)

I am terribly sorry about your first experience, good lady. I am feeling 
major guilt over ignoring a newcomer this past weekend myself, and hope 
that I would not treat you the same way were our paths to cross.
