Subject: *WH* Medieval Exhibit in Baltimore starting today
For those of you going to Crown, you may want to make a trip in to Baltimore to see this exhibit. This information was sent to the Historic Costume list. I've combined several postings to get it all in.
The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore opens an exhibit today on the "Crusader Bible" which is a 13th century illuminated manuscript. The show runs from 10/27 through 12/29. Unbound pages from the manuscript showing pictures illustrating the Old Testament will be displayed with artifacts from the era (the page showed a mail shirt and a helm). Information on the exhibit can be found here: Exhibit.
According to Robin Netherton, this manuscript is also known as the Maciejowski Bible. It belongs to the Pierpont Morgan (New York) and is apparently on loan to the Walters. This is probably the best single source for images of Western European 13th century costume, in that it shows men and women of various classes in reasonably realistic contexts, and shows many views and angles of specific styles.
It exists in facsimile under the title "Old Testament Miniatures." Copies (used) typically run about $120. It's of special interest to manuscript scholars because the Latin text is glossed in Arabic and Hebrew, reflecting the hands of various owners over the centuries.
