As for making your own bias tape, I've found a really neat guide at several
fabric stores and in crafts catalogs that you just thread the cloth through
and it folds it perfectly for you. It's not expensive at all, and it
eliminates the risk of burned fingers when trying to fold and iron it into
shape yourself.
You might try asking at your nicer specialty sewing stores if you can
special order the iron-on linen interfacing. There may even be something
you can purchase to treat fabrics with to make them bond with an iron, too.
