[MR] judging, shields, beatings, opinions

i grow more weary of the mindless nit picking but i will comment....

judged by the contestants, sure. and, by your own admission judged by those
in attendance, those that are to follow the victor during their reign, some
crowns see a lot more support than others. the judgment that is passed on
them at the time of their victory carries a ton of weight. part of the
reason we dont have problems of any great magnitude in crown lists.
strength can certainly be displayed through ones chivalric demeanor and
action as can inspiration. and im sorry that during your times on the
throne you didnt feel that your strength (whichever definition you want to
use) or your speed (speed of action, thought, heart, etc) were never used.
i can tell you that during my times on the throne i have relied on them time
and time again. perhaps our experiences differ?

as to your comments about big shields being used in crown tourney or on the
list field in general you must be referring to some other kingdom (calontir
perhaps?). shields in atlantia are pretty consistent with most of the other
kingdoms (the west being a major exception). more so, shield size is no
excuse for lack of skill. i love fighting guys with huge shields. i find
it easier to hit them since they cant see through them. but again, not in
this kingdom. and im sorry to hear that you had someone beat your shield
until you couldnt hold it up anymore. that sounds like a non fun fight to
me. ive never seen anything like that happen, if i did i would certainly
say something to both fighters. get together with me next time you see me
and i would be happy to show you a few things that might help you deal with
a situation like that should it ever happen again.

regards
logan

I definately view it as a change; so does the Board; they can
issue a G&PD to 'clarify' a section of Corpora without member
comment; they didn't feel that this is a clarification. This is a
change, period, end of story.

I find your last sentence interesting. 'the contest is
judged...' yes, but only by the participants. Those of us watching
may form opinions on the merits of the contestants, but these
opinions have no effect on the results of a fight (unless you happen
to be the Marshall or the Crown...) And, frankly, if 'fortitude and
strength' are all that is being displayed we are definately going
about this all wrong. I'd rather see inspiration and chivalry carry
the day than tireless use of a big shield and a heavy hand with a
sword defeating opponents by battering their shields until they can't
lift them any longer (been there, didn't enjoy it. :-) Strength is a
valuable talent for a knight; speed is often even more useful;
neither is something that is used while sitting on the throne.

A simple thought experiment: who was the greatest fighter in
Arthur's kingdom? It wasn't Arthur.
