Actually, there is someone in the West Kingdom who collects data on
Peerages, and when they were awarded. I believe he also collects data on
Laurels and why they were awarded.
The reason there has been no concerted effort to do a scientific assessment
of membership trends in SCA is because of cost. Imagine all of the things
that have to go into a study like this. You cannot do it by email because
email addresses are not only transient but not everyone has email. A smaller
percentage of folks do not have snail mail or phones, so you would most
likely take one of those options. Of course, few people actually return
snail mail. Guess it should be done by phone.
Considering the size of SCA now, you are going to have to actually interview
about 3,000 past and present members and the non-members. Oh you will need a
database...and the equipment for that to run on. Oh and trained
researchers/interviews and statisticians. I can do that, and I have some
experience with analysis. Oh by the way, if I don't volunteer my time is
general worth $90.00 to $180.00 per hour.
Perhaps people think a project of this scope is a bit pricey unless you want
to do a half-way job. (See Your Highness? I didn't use the half-a**ed word.
I think I am in the clear.) Considering the current financials before the
BoD, my guess is money is holding them back.
Just being practical,
Auree

In fact, after five years of pleading, I can not even get the BOD to do a
study of the membership, that any other competent body should have long ago
done. There is not a single scientific instrument to determine what
activities are most being done, no follow up on WHY members leave the SCA,
or what about the SCA brought new members into the society...No one knows
how many Peerages have been awarded for leather working, for illumination,
or any other "specialty" within the Laurel, nor can one tell with any degree
of accuracy what types of service are most rewarded with a Pelican.
