Sorry it took me a while to answer, we were offline for a while due to
Mother Nature!
Just because it's period doesnt' necessarily mean it's that much of a
hassel or expensive. Often it's more practical than the modern
alternatives. Here's an article:

and you can usually get beeswax from your local leather supplier, craft
store or health food store, though the latter two are usually more pricey.
