I am answering the topic of a lack of response in
general, not Anarra in particular.

Since I became seneschal, I have recieved quite a few
emails and phone calls from potential new members, as
I am sure the other seneschals also recieve. I always
suggest that they contact the chatelaine and give them
that contact information. I also suggest that they
look at our webpage for information and directions to
our regular gatherings. I almost always get the same
response "Oh, I already did, that's where I found your
name.". They then ask me what they should do to get
involved and I tell them to show up at the regularly
scheduled events. After a few months of this as a new
seneschal, it dawned on me that they want a buddy to
meet them at their first event or fight practice (duh)
and that is why they were calling when they already
knew when and where our fight practices were held.
After a popular demo, I can recieve four or five of
these requests over a matter of a few days and the
chatelaine will recieve several also. All the folks
who cannot schedule a meeting with me, the chatelaine
or the baron in a relatively short amount of time tend
to be lost and do not return. Throw in a few other
issues in the officer's life like quarterly reports, a
big local event, an incipient group request, a family,
a real job, etc. and scheduling these meetings can get
out of hand.

What the populace in general can do to assist with
building new membership is to voluteer to the
chatelaine and the seneschal to be willing to be a
buddy for newcomers, so that this service does not
become overwhelming to officers who are already doing
a lot of other things as well. Also, demo organizers
can keep contact sign up sheets and volunteers can
call the folks on the list and try to follow up on
those who expressed interest.
