Greetings My Lords and Ladies:

I have been delighted to read the thread on the subject and would like to
add the following...

It is my belief that every SCA member shares the responsibility of
attracting, educating and retaining new members.  To that end, I would
encourage all of you who come in contact with a person who expresses
interest in the SCA to answer as many questions as you can and refer them
to your local Chatelaine or Castellan (if you have one.)  If your group
doesn't have one, I strongly encourage you to solicit volunteers to fill
this office.
More than one volunteer?  Great!  A Chatelaine can have deputies...one
for demos, one for loan garb, one for newcomer education...


Oddly enough, most of our new contacts are not obtained via demos.  They
either have a friend who is an SCA member or they find us surfing the
web.    Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that demos should
discontinue.  On the contrary!   The more positive visibility we get the
better!  I just want to emphasize the importance of generating enthusiasm
through verbal communication and having a really attractive and
informative web site.

The biggest detriment to retaining new members when everyone hangs out
with the people they know rather than including the newcomers in
conversations or activities.  I don't believe that this behavior is
intentional...it is simply human nature...something we all need to work
at improving.

Have ideas?  Share them with your local Chatelaine and Castellan...then
hopefully they will post it to our Chatelaine's e-groups list!
