There has been talk on these lines for many years, probably fueled by music
teachers like myself who have to try to explain it to children. (Jose, can
you see...one nation, under God, invisible, with LIVERTY and justice...:-) )
The singing range is very high, and very low, the words are antiquated and
polysyllabic, and it¹s a pain for any singer. My students are always amazed
when they realize that it took ³all that² just to say, ³Do you remember
the flag that we saw last night? Is it still there this morning?² Soooo
what is the NUMBER ONE requested song from my students? You got it: ³The
Star-Spangled Banner². From a very young age, the associations are strong,
and it IS a very stirring piece of music that never ceases to evoke an
emotional response. I guess I¹d rather suffer through rather than change.
As for ³God Bless America², I always envision Kate Smith....
