Speaking of which...
There was a hat competition during the reign of
Stephan and Niobe. I entered it with a veil wrapped
padded roll. I had a little booklet of documentation
including mostly northern school paintings and one
perticular "descent from the cross" that had lots of
flemish ladies all wearing hats. One of the judges
(and they were all female) wrote nothing on the
comment sheet except something like "The lady in the
descent from the cross painting is a gypsy". She did
not indicate who she was.
This comment frustrated me immensely, and I would love
to hear more. Because of timing issues at the event,
the whole competition closed and dispersed rather
quickly after judging to make way for court, so I was
never able to find out who made the comment. Questions
came to mind like: "Huh?", and "Does that disqualify
my entry as a period hat or this painting as valid
documentation?", "Of all the work that I did, why was
that the only thing you felt that you should comment
on.", "Which lady, there are 5 or more in this
painting all wearing hats???", "Where do you get
documentation about gypsy's and what makes you think
there is one in this picture?", "Am I supposed to
learn something about hats from that comment and if
so, what???" "Why would Van der Weyden put a gypsy in
a very religious painting?". So if that is you,
please contact me cause I am still very curious on
this gypsy/hat question.

Magdalena de Hazebrouck-Purpure, a fess fusilly argent between three torches or. While Joshua was near Jericho, he raised his eyes and saw one who stood facing him, drawn sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and asked "Are you one of us or of our enemies?" He replied, "Neither. I am the captain of the host of the Lord and I have just arrived in this valley." Joshua 5, 13-14.
