My IDEAL rattan glove would have a breathable, non-slip grip, 1/4" of closed
cell padding on the backs, and u-shaped rigid metal finger backs that reach
all the way to the grips, so that impacts are transmitted around the finger
to the rattan, instead of compressing the finger bones between the padding
and the rattan. It would not have to grip anything smaller than 1" in
diameter. Stamped 18 ga. stainless would do. While you're designing the
die stamp, add some fluting for rigidity and style. The metacarpal (back of
the palm) would also have a stainless hard shell over the closed-cell
padding. The wrist bell would not have to be articulated if it's designed
carefully.

In other words, the ultimate rattan glove would look like finger gauntlets
from the mid-1400s, and be pure high tech inside. It would come in three
sizes, in your choice of silver or black, for $200 a pair MSRP, ($150
street). It would credibly go with later-style harness, and 14th C if you
don't look too closely.

Above all, it should be ready to fight, right out of the box. No
drill-your-own padding and strapping! Any marshall inspecting armor should
be able to say, "Acme rattan gaunts? Of course they pass. Next!"

I'd buy a pair tomorrow, and kiss my brand new steel mittens goodbye.
