[MR] request for aid in determining distances from helm to head

As many of you are aware the SEM has ruled that no SCA arrow can penetrate
more than 1/2 inch into a helm. If this 1/2 inch is determined as based on
a 14 ga. helm with slots rather than a helm with 5/16 bar stock grill, it
leaves little room for holding and shooting the arrow behind the APD...some
of the archers fingers are bigger than the space allowed and when you add
gloves I have safety concerns about the accuracy of shots.
The 1/2 inch seems arbitrary. To my knowledge no one has ever determined
just how far the face is from the helm.....If I get my helm 1/2 inch from my
face, especially the eye area which prompted all this concern...my nose is
going to be broken putting ON the helm, much less taking a head shot.
All this is a preamble to asking those of you with the tightest fitting
helms, and least distance from the bars or the sheet metal to take a few
seconds next time you armor up and measure how far back your face actually
is.....for handy reference a penny is exactly 3/4 inch in diameter if you
don't have a tape handy....
Please email me the resulting measurements so that I can compile a
statistical average, mode and median to send to the SEM and SAM.
If marshals doing inspections could estimate the distance this would also be
helpful....please also email me your observations for forwarding the SEM,
SAM and the BOD.
Thank you for the extra effort this may take you, but it is important to
having safe CA in the SCA
