If you want one for SCA use, then what you want is a bleted plaid.  Get some 
material, preferably wool (about a 10oz weight if you want to use it for 
summer wear), 55 or 60 inches wide and 4 to 5 yards in length.  Tartan is 
most common, solid is ok.  Make sure the tartan is woven in, not a print 
(shudder).
