This question actually calls for a more public answer so I've copied the
list. (Others are likely to want to know the answer too!)
Simple route #1:
Take your best route to US 15 north at Leesburg VA.
Take US 15 north out of Leesburg, across the river at Point of Rocks MD.
Continue on 15 to Frederick MD (about 11 miles).
Take exit 12 onto I-70 West.
Follow I-70 to Hancock MD at the MD/PA border and follow from *** below.
Simple route #2:
Take your best route to Winchester VA.
Get on I-81 North in Winchester and follow it to Hagerstown MD.
I think it's exit 4-B in Hagerstown -- get on I-70 West.
Follow I-70 to Hancock MD at the MD/PA border and follow from *** below.
Scenic Route (same distance, a bit slower):
Take your best route to Winchester VA.
Get on I-81 north just long enough to get north of town.
Get off at exit 3nn -- turn left onto US 11 South.
About 1/4 mile later take the right-hand fork onto VA 37 South.
Take the first exit and turn right onto US 522 North.
Follow US 522 to the merge with I-70 West in Hancock MD.
*** for all sets of directions continue here ***
Take I-70 nominally West (but actually north at this point) into PA.
BEWARE: When you get to Breezewood, I-70 comes to a TRAFFIC LIGHT.
Turn right at the light and take the first exit to the PA Turnpike.
Take the Turnpike westbound all the way to the Cranberry exit (#3).
Follow the signs for I-79 North, take I-79 north to US 422, etc.
Please be aware that there is considerable construction on the PA
Turnpike. I'll try to post an update next week.
