I was there, and it is my understanding from the investigation done on site
that the authorities felt the heater may have been damaged. It was said that
it did not appear that the gas had been turned one and there was not sign
that it the heater had ever been lit. It was thought at the time (further
investigation continues) that these poor gentles were the victim of a leak
of some sort. This is a terrible tragedy and I hope that this will make us
all a bit more careful in the future.

Just curious. What type of propane heater was it.
I use a catlytic heater from coleman that is "supposed" to be safe. I
don't trust it so I turn it off after a few minutes and my tent is warmed
up.
I am investigating the option of buying a hotvent
http://www.zodi.com/2000/files/hotvent/hotvent.html which looks like the
safest way to heat your tent if used properly.

Thanks
