In case anyone is considering buying these, let me
warn you what you're getting into: I learned how to
clean these coins in grad school. The method we used
was electrolytic reduction, similar to the method
developed at the British Museum. It's the most
efficient way to deal with large lots of coins, but
only about 1 in 10 survive the process, and it takes
several hours per coin. You can work slower and get a
higher success rate, but you'd be talking about as
much as a couple of days per coin, and you'll still
lose some. My advice would be to buy them in lots,
especially if they're heavily encrusted, in order to
be certain you end up with some left when you're done
cleaning them.
That said, if anyone decides to make this purchase,
feel free to contact me off-list and I'll give you
detailed instructions for the cleaning method I
learned.
