as with most things in the marshals handbook the ruling can fall a little
unclear. the sections specifically regarding the use of street hockey
gloves and/or lacrosse gloves clearly states that a street hockey glove
behind a shield "in tandem" with a basket hilt is fine.
as far as your weapon hand is concerned the rule reads a little more vaguely
as it says: "If a basket hilt is used, a vambrace or partial gauntlet shall
cover the remaining portions of the hand and wrist."
so it really depends on what type of basket you use. many fighters (mostly
out west) are using single metal strips (a 1/2 to 3/4 wide metal band) that
run right in front of their middle knuckles. this type of hilt obviously
leaves much of the hand exposed. there are several other styles of wire
baskets that also leave much of the hand and wrist unprotected. these
styles, while lightweight and fast, are unsafe by themselves.
the key to understanding the ruling is the part that says "a vambrace or
partial gauntlet shall cover the remaining portions of the hand and wrist".
in atlantia most of the hilts being used leave nothing exposed (remaining)
of either the hand or the wrist and hence a street hockey glove would
satisfy the rule. i spoke with several marshals regarding this very ruling
while i was at pennsic since i noticed a few violations of street hockey
gloves and their usage. everyone i spoke to seemed very clear on the
interpretation (these were more specifically shield hand situations).
i will be in contact with duke eringlin to see about an addendum to allow
more clarity in the verbiage of the armor standards.

Did anyone else run into problems getting your armour inspected at
Pennsic this year? And I do refer specifically to having "an exposed
thumb during a thrusting motion".
I was told by two different marshalls (not the ones doing the
inspections) that the standard street hockey gloves were "Society
minimum standards", but the inspecting marshals told me that they were
NOT SMS... the second marshal, after finding out I was from Atlantia
shrugged and said "Oh, that explains it... Atlantia *thinks* these
gloves are minimum standard" and passed me.
Just wondering....
