Boy there's a subject that could spawn huge amounts of
debate. Did you want these answers sent privately or
publicly. If we start a big public debate it could be
something that fills up inboxes for days.
For the main questions: I often note that those asking
for anonymous entries are folks who have felt some
unfairness in judging and feel that anonymous entries
would have created needed fairness. Unfortunately for
those who feel unfairness I don't believe anonymous
entries work either.
Speaking as a scribing judge, I can say that
experienced judges often prefer a chance to talk to
entrants personally and offer constructive advice in a
more open fashion rather than trying to hide names.
I can say that when I managed the last scroll
competition for Their Majesties, we got rid of the
forms completely and used a simple ranking system.
Many judges dislike the standard Atlantian forms
(although not all) because they have a hard time
understanding categories and don't tend to think in
terms of categories. Plus there's often too many
times where several categories might be n/a, possibly
giving that entry a lower number.
When we did the formless judging for the scroll
comopetition, cards were placed by each entry and the
judges had lots more time than normal for constructive
commenting. (Ya know - something a little more than
"nice job" so that artisans could hear about where
they should concentrate efforts next.)
I hope I don't spawn too much controversy as they
weren't meant to be inflammatory but you're finding a
subject near and dear to my heart. If you'd like
further details about possible formless judging
systems that are fair and constructive please let me
know. We can continue this conversation privately.
