The line should be run with a bottom line of safety. The line marshal can and should overrule any archer on the line that wants to depart from the normal shooting if in their opinion the departure would degrade the safety of the line. So if I had good archers who wanted to safely play at their skill level but would be above the skill level of other archers and/or beginners on the line. I would say they could not do it. But at Crecy the off beat shooting was done be experienced archers and no archers were involved who might lessen the safety factor. Moving the line could be looked at as maintaining safety so that everyone knew they were now shooting at the farther distance. However through it all the standard line commands should be maintained, so the marshal should say "Archers may retrieve their arrows." not " Lets go get them.".

How's that for a serious answer to a not as serious question, but nevertheless a good question.

Colum

WOW! Let?s harken back to last year?s Crecy. Lorelei had an MIT running the line. ?The archers?, names withheld to protect the guilty, started doing things like moving the shooting line. The MIT told them they had to shoot from the line. The archers didn?t like that so they picked up the line and moved it back. They shot by laying on their backs, holding the bow in their feet, and pulling the string with two hands. The poor MIT was seriously perplexed. So does this mean our DEM is going to ruin the fun of ?those archers??

Cog who likes to stir the pot just to see what?s on the bottom. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Baron Colum, point well taken and this should be a notice to us all as marshals that we need to "practice what we teach!" We are all out there to have fun but we should be running our practices just like formal events from a safety and procedure perspective. Some of our practices have large enough numbers to really be a mini event so in these cases I would hope the MIC is conducting full inspections and using stickers, etc if the numbers are over our rule limit.

Was not a finger pointing, just something I noticed and I would like us all to take a minute to set the example for our new marshals and marshals in training. If we get rid of the bad habits up front it is much more productive for us all.

Thanks to you all for what you do!

I know that I go over the commands in class, but that doesn't mean an MIT of mine might be guilty of not using standard commands. I have noticed that at practices where we have the usual crowd and know everyone we "experienced" marshals will not always use the standard commands. I can easily see an MIT picking up on this and, under the auspices of "How you practice is how you perform", not using proper terminology. If all marshals make an effort to ensure standard commands are used, we may see the MIT's following our example rather than our classroom instructions. I know I will.

Good afternoon everyone, I wanted to get the word out to all of our teaching marshals. I have noticed this year that on a few occasions now MiT's I have personally watched have not been properly executing in how to properly call the line, handle archers on the line or potential hazard avoidance. I am not finger pointing at our teaching marshals in any way but I want to stress to each of you the importance of making sure those MiT's understand their responsibilities and how to properly use the standard set of line calls; "archers to the line", "Archers ready?", "loose, hold" etc....

I have seen MiTs using go, stop, okay, alright, etc and it confuses everyone on the line. Also the safety check "CLEAR DOWN RANGE?" is just that. It is a shout down range to potential safety issues, not just for the people on the line. The new marshals need to assure they are projecting downrange as well in case there is anyone down there...

Please in your classes make sure you stress the safety aspects and the proper way to do things. I know they are learning and we were all new at some point, hell Im still a newbie, or so Im told :P

It is our job to assure they learn properly.

In Service,

Janyn
