Lady Katsumi, it is perfectly acceptable and I would ask that you all continue to put as much information on the MiT sheets as you can. I would caution our sponsors again to not simply give full credit if the MiT’s did not work those areas. The last thing we want is to simply “push” through MiT’s that are not ready or don’t have enough experience. Everyone is different and some take more help than others. So I think what you are doing is just fine.

I have a question about signing off as an MiC for an event.  I have signed for MiTs that have only run a line at an event, but I made sure that was the only thing checked for that event to make it clear that was all they did.  I figured their sponsor would not count that as a complete event, but it would be a record to help track progress.  Should we not put those kinds of entries on the form at all?  At Defending the Gate the MiT I am sponsoring helped setup and takedown, but couldn't be there during the day so we didn't put it on her paperwork as I'm not counting it and I already know what she did so it's of no reporting use to me.

OK, not intending to split hairs here but…………As Gulf Wars and Pennsic are long events, can they serve, for example, three days then get signed off?  Personally I would be willing to accept two days but at least one day, the one of the three, has to be in kingdom.

This is a good question and we have been allowing if MiTs work multiple days they can get credit for it at Pennsic. Also one correction to what I posted, the MiT can send me their completed form, what I meant to post is that the sponsor needs to sign off prior to that happening.

Janyn,

One question with regard to this post.  Does Pennsic or Gulf Wars count as only one MIT session or two?  I ask thinking an MIT may serve multiple days on the range and get a fairly wide representation of bow types, people, and situations.

Every now and then I have to come to you all with unpleasant items that must be addressed. This is one of those times…. I have now been approached on two separate occasions about MiT conduct on the range, and I also witnessed it myself at a recent event. I want to make it very clear I will not tolerate warranted marshals breaking the rules for MiT’s and I suspect on these occasions it was lack of understanding on the MIC’s part. I want to pass along a reminder about our MiT’s and how we evaluate them on their journey to becoming a warranted marshal:

1.       The MiT MUST be present and participate in 3 separate events as a helping MiT. We ask that two of those events be outside the MiT’s local group. Pennsic does count. What I mean by “participate” is that they are there from the start to the finish helping with setup, inspection, the line and teardown. I have been informed and witnessed MiT’s strolling up and working for an hour while things were running and getting a signature from the MIC of archery for that day. This is unacceptable and frankly not fair to those that are putting in an effort! I don’t need to remind everyone that we are the most dangerous martial activity in the SCA and we all need to take it seriously. If there are problems with a MiT later, I will hold the sponsor marshal responsible as this was the push to have a sponsor that will attest and sign off that the MiT was ready to be warranted. Please take your role as sponsor and to our MIC’s for the day, seriously. If I continue to get reports like this I will investigate and take action if necessary.

2.       For the sponsors of MiT’s, before sending me their paperwork (yes it is YOUR job as sponsor to send me their paperwork, not theirs….) make sure their comments are supportive and you feel they are ready to proceed. We are not simply just handing out warrants and I find it interesting that in the 2 years I have been DEM, I have yet to see a MiT that needed a bit more time. This alarms me! Also you as the sponsor should be administering the test to the MiT to assure they know and understand our rules. They should be getting 80% or better on the test as it is based on our rules.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to let me know. I will be monitoring this issue very closely and hope it is behind us. I would also like to see our regional marshals take a closer look at things that are happening in their areas of responsibility.  I thank you all for your help and attention to make Atlantian archery what it is!
