Noble Friends of the Bow, and the dart,
Lord Janyn and I recently discussed an idea of an atlatl class just for
marshals (and MITs) at War of the Wings. He told me to go ahead and
float the idea to all of you to see if there would be interest, and if
someone with lots of atlatl experience would step forward to teach this
class.
Atlatl experience is really hard to get, and many of us rarely even have
a chance to inspect these weapons, let along try them. Yet we are all
expected to be able to marshal an atlatl event, or at least host them on
our regular range.
War of the Wings will bring together one of the largest concentrations
of marshals this year, and would be a perfect place to have atlatl
instruction to get us all some much needed hands-on experience,
experience that we can't get at University. I'm thinking a one or
two-hour class, depending on the number of participants (or maybe two
classes if there's enough interest). We should have instruction on how
to inspect the atlatl and its darts, with examples to handle. We need
instruction on scoring schema, and on special events such as how to
stage an atlatl battle. Finally, we all need a chance to throw at least
a couple of darts. If we have an atlatl range with lots of loaner
equipment that is open frequently during the event, this might be done
ad-hoc by each marshal. If not, then during the class itself we should
each get a chance to throw darts under the instruction of an experienced
marshal. Finally, we need a decent one or two-page handout.
So, my friends, who is interested in this class? How can we improve on
the basic idea? (I know you all will have lots to say about this!)
Finally, are there marshals with the experience, who have the equipment,
and can teach this class?
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, Who Rarely Sees and Atlatl
