Yes, what I was reading also covered that but it worded it as
"penetration of archers" and this being a somewhat family site I thought

Not only that cog, but a 3/4" thick (or 1" thick crossbow bolt, as I
have seen). Made of Ash or similar heavy wood, versus our modern 5/16"
birch or cedar ...
Means that you have a LOT more mass behind that projectile. A lot more
stopping power.
It's shooting a 45 magnum versus a .22
