Noble Friends of the Bow,
The current issue of THE HIGHLANDER magazine (Oct.-Nov. 2012) features
an article on the Royal Company of Archers of Edinburgh. The RCA dates
from 1676. They received a Royal Charter from Queen Anne in 1704, and
have provided ceremonial bodyguards for the British monarchs in Scotland
since 1822.
The article is a bit breathy, and somewhat shallow on historical
details, but the magazine is aimed at the general public rather than
re-enactors or scholars. There are four photos (two in color), plus the
color cover which shows the Company at parade rest in dress uniforms,
with their yew longbows and short swords. Pretty neat!
I subscribe to the magazine, so I'm probably a bit ahead of the
newsstand copies. Barnes & Noble stocks THE HIGHLANDER at my local
store, and I suspect most of their chain does. It should be available
soon if not already in stock.
Yours Aye,
Mungo
