[Archers] St. Sebastians III?????

Phew, finally caught up on all my emails. :-) I'm glad to see the St. Sebastian discussion starting early, as it needs to! Last year Tim and I were unable to attend Pennsic, so I missed the shoot, but THIS year I'm going, not sure about Tim yet (work, kids, etc.) I'm happy to help where ever needed the day of and in bringing a target as well. I don't mind giving up a day at Pennsic so that a bunch of other people can have fun. It promotes archery as a family activity, it promotes the legitimacy of archery as a foundation of the SCA and it's just plain FUN!

Keep me on the back burner right now for MiC if you need one. I'm juggling a few things that may take up my time but will know soon. Jay, you DO need a break.

I agree that we need to get commitment from marshals out of kingdom ahead of time and not depend on a general call for help and maybe someone shows up, maybe someone doesn't. Another option to the one marshal per target scenario is to have "experienced archers" help as well. We all know a few archers who have been around for ages who would be completely competent running a station even though they are not marshals. I would do this IF we did not have enough marshals. Having a sash or other identifier is a great idea.

If East or Mid decide they want to take this on, I know they can count on us to help so that it remains a quality event. I don't want it to suck one year and people poopoo it around Pennsic. That would reflect poorly on us. We've set the bar high, which means we may be needed to prop it up occasionally.

Subject: [Archers] St. Sebastians III?????

Good evening everyone, as we now enter into November (wow where the heck did this year go?), I wanted to get the pulse of how you the Atlantian Archery community is feeling about the St. Sebastian’s shoot going forward. Before I contact Lord Godric to find out if the East or Mid are even thinking about running it, I wanted to find out how you all are feeling about possibly running it again next year. Now before we go down the path of “absolutely yes or what are you thinking?” I want to make a few points very clear. I have already talked with a lot of you and heard comments like “it is one of the only reasons I want to go to Pennsic,” or “it is really the only real fun I have in martial activities at Pennsic,” etc…. That is all fine and well but I also understand and have talked with quite a few of the regulars that have given up a good part of their vacations to put this shoot on the last 2 years. So before I even offer for Atlantia to think about hosting the shoot again ,I would like to hear your thoughts. I will be very blunt and open and state that I think it is time for some of our marshal’s and archers who have not helped over the last 2 years to contribute targets and marshal the event. I perfectly understand if some of our contributors from the last 2 years want to take a year off, they have well deserved that! But, at the same time we cannot pull off this shoot if we don’t have enough target stations and marshals to run it.

We have tried 2 approaches so far with scheduling for the shoot and I think I have come up with a 3rd that would ease the numbers we would need. If we are thinking about 12-14 stations again, I was thinking that if we had a marshal per station for a 4 hour morning shift, and then they switch with relief to take the afternoon 4 shift, this would cut the number of needed marshals down to 28 or so which is about the number of volunteers we get each year. BUT! This would need to be a majority of folks that have not stepped up to help over the last 2 years. I’m sure some of you will offer again such as I, but I would like to see some new faces contributing to what has become a real staple of Pennsic now! I would offer to organize it again this year but would also like to see a volunteer to be MIC for the event next year.

So again, before I contact Godric, what are your thoughts about next year? Please remember just saying “yes” won’t be enough, we will need to backup your offers with help!

In Service,

Janyn
