[Archers] Peerage

As an active combat archer I can comment here.... I think the mentality has shifted a bit but I doubt seriously changed. 4 years ago at Pennsic was the first year that we had quite the contingent of combat archers on the field. Myself, Seamus, Godai, Treya, Thomas and a few others were out there. There are stories still being told of how 3 of us completely cleared and kept clear the entire left side of the field during the gate battle. The King of North Shield came over to Logan at the time and told him how effective his archers were and we were a force to reckoned with. Even though the success of the East and Allies winning the war that year was in great part to those combat archers, Logan never even mentioned it at Atlantia court. No great surprise to any of us. The following years how grown in more and more archers and siege playing and still there is very little recognition. I will give credit where it is due and there are many heavy's that now understand us and what we can do, as well as royalty. King Vlad and Jason use us all the time.

So in the end I don’t hold my breath one second that all of us will be approached to be squired let alone proceed any higher by the hand of the heavies. This is why I continue and will continue to support a peerage for Archery / siege and thrown weapons of our own. I am amazed how much the board members and those that hold key positions continue to really miss the bigger picture.

In Service...

My 2¢:

When I joined the SCA in around 89 in An-Tir, I wanted to get into combat archery. Until I saw first hand how little respect they got on the field.

I hope things have changed since then.

But if that sentiment exists in some percentage, I find it hard to believe that a combat archer with the equal relative skill as a heavy, would be picked first to be a squire. Further, we have to be an amazing archer relatively.

Clearly there are other issues to be considered in the selection process. I do not dismiss them.

I am adding an observation not to throw flame on the fire, but in hopes that the mentality has changed. I would appreciate being proved wrong.

Yours,
Cameron deGrey
