[Archers] Peerage

My understanding is that the Chivalry has recently been more accepting of combat archers. Esp after the way 3 archers held a bridge at Pennsic (sharks tooth for each). In particular, I recall Count Vlad standing up for us at Highland Rivers Melees when the heavies wanted to not count archer kills in a few scenarios.

But its been awhile since I've been on the field as a combat archer. I had heard we were "dumbing it down" out of concern that if we became too effective we wouldn't be invited to play. This was about the time I was all excited about bringing Marine Corps small unit tactics into the mix, so it kinda discouraged me. But again, its been awhile since I suited up. Seamus, Janyn and Godai can speak to this better than me.

Hey Cam, we going to start seeing more of you at Sunday practices?  :)

Cheers

Atlantian Archery. Nothing exists within 100 yards without our permission.

My 2¢:

When I joined the SCA in around 89 in An-Tir, I wanted to get into combat archery. Until I saw first hand how little respect they got on the field.

I hope things have changed since then.

But if that sentiment exists in some percentage, I find it hard to believe that a combat archer with the equal relative skill as a heavy, would be picked first to be a squire. Further, we have to be an amazing archer relatively.

Clearly there are other issues to be considered in the selection process. I do not dismiss them.

I am adding an observation not to throw flame on the fire, but in hopes that the mentality has changed. I would appreciate being proved wrong.

Yours,
Cameron deGrey
